5 Day Trips from Punta Cana by Car

Boats on turquoise water by a palm-lined beach

All-inclusive is comfortable, but the Dominican east has much more to see. With your Nelly car you can leave early, be back for dinner and visit places that tours reach only when they're crowded.

1. Playa Macao

About 30 minutes from Bávaro. A wide beach with waves and a local feel, perfect for surfing or simply walking. There are small fish restaurants right on the sand.

2. Higüey and the Basilica

Less than an hour away. The Basilica of Our Lady of Altagracia, a modern landmark, is the most visited shrine in the country. Combine the visit with lunch in the town center.

3. Bayahíbe and Saona Island

Just over an hour on the Autopista del Coral. Bayahíbe is a fishing village with crystal-clear water and the departure point for boats to Saona Island. Arrive early to catch the first departures.

4. Altos de Chavón

Near La Romana, a little over an hour away. A replica of a 16th-century Mediterranean village with an amphitheater, a museum and views of the Chavón River.

5. Miches and Playa Esmeralda

To the north, along the coastal road. A still little-developed area with quiet beaches and mountains in the background. Ideal if you want to escape the crowds.

Before you set off

  • Check the route in a navigation app and download the offline map.
  • Bring cash in pesos for tolls, parking and local food.
  • Take it easy on secondary roads: there may be animals and motorbikes.

And if anything happens, 24/7 roadside assistance is included in your rental: 809-544-7111 (option 3).
